Endangered Mallorca horse takes centre stage in Sineu
Carriages, horses and traditional bagpipers filled the Plaça des Fossar in Sineu, Mallorca, on Sunday for the first Diada of the Mallorca horse. Llorenç Galmés, president of the Council of Mallorca, attended the event, held as part of the Diada de Mallorca celebrations. The fair puts the island’s native horse breed in focus as it faces extinction.
The first edition was devoted to the breed, along with the culture and heritage around it. Galmés said the day was intended to build knowledge of the Mallorca horse and encourage its conservation.
Visitors saw an exhibition of carriages and horse tack, as well as a contest judging the horses’ physical conformation. The programme also included a talk on the breed, a horseshoeing demonstration and performances by xeremiers, Mallorca’s traditional bagpipers.
Rafel Bosch, the island councillor for Finance, Innovation and Public Function, and Fernando Rubio, councillor for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, also attended.
