Mallorca rally driver, 63, dies in ravine crash
A 63-year-old rally driver dies when his car falls into a ravine near Mortitx, Mallorca, on Friday afternoon. His 39-year-old co-driver suffers spinal injuries and is taken to hospital. Both are German nationals competing in the sixth Rally 550 Challenge de Mallorca.
The crash happens at kilometre 10 of the Ma-10, on the stretch from Pollença towards Lluc, according to the Civil Guard.
Co-driver rescued from ravine
Firefighters from Mallorca go down to the car and bring the injured woman out. Medics from a private company treat her and take her to Son Espases University Hospital, where she is admitted.
The Civil Guard’s judicial police unit in Inca, Mallorca, is investigating the crash. It is not yet known whether a driving error, a fault with the car or something else caused it. A judicial team is due at the scene to arrange the recovery of the driver’s body.
Rally called off
The organisers cancel all remaining timed stages and end the rally and its related activities. They describe the decision as painful but final, saying no result or sporting goal matters more than the people affected. They have sent condolences to the driver’s family and loved ones.
