Mallorca water plan: MÉS takes 10 demands to town halls
MÉS per Mallorca is taking 10 water demands to every town hall on Mallorca after its municipal assembly agreed the move on Wednesday in Montuïri. The party wants councils to back measures it says will put the island’s water management on a sustainable footing.
The proposals draw on MÉS’s 10-point water plan. They call for stronger checks that enough water is available before any new growth goes ahead, and for water capacity to be built into land-use and urban planning.
Tariffs, investment and water reuse
MÉS also wants progressive water tariffs and a special multi-year investment plan for the water cycle, funded by the Balearic Government and the Island Council. Its package includes reusing treated water, restoring aquifers and introducing measures against waste.
The party also proposes new plans to adapt to the climate emergency. It calls for public infrastructure and quality water in every municipality, lower energy use across the water cycle, and tighter public control, transparency and coordination between administrations.
Deciding what Mallorca can support
Angelina Pérez, president of MÉS per Mallorca’s municipal assembly, said Mallorca needed a change in direction on water policy. The island must first identify and protect the resources it has, she said, before deciding what level of development the territory can sustain.
“The water we will need tomorrow depends on the decisions we take today,” Pérez said.
