Mallorca bus cuts: 16 routes stop as workers drive
Mallorca’s winter TIB bus timetable has taken 16 routes off the road and cut trips on 31 more: students face longer waits, while some workers from towns outside Palma, Mallorca, are driving into the city. Local group Vianants de Mallorca raised the concerns on Friday, 6 November. The timetable came into force on 1 November.
Students wait, workers drive
Students from towns outside Palma who cannot afford to rent in the city rely on buses to get to class, the group says. With fewer departures, they must wait longer, leave earlier or get home later. Vianants de Mallorca warns of tiredness and lost study time.
Workers who switch to cars face extra costs, the group says. It also links the change to traffic jams and poorer air quality in Palma. The group argues that summer services serve journeys between hotels, beaches and the airport, while winter cuts come despite islanders still needing to reach work, classes, medical appointments and errands.
Capdepera loses most connections
Weekly departures have fallen from 17,535 under the summer timetable to 10,773 under the new one — a drop of more than 6,700, according to the group. Capdepera, Mallorca, has lost 83.4% of its connections, followed by Son Servera at 80.4% and Alcúdia at 72.6%. Route 324 between Can Picafort and Alcúdia is among those no longer running.
There are still extra trips on route 203 and routes in Calvià this month. TIB has announced a further timetable adjustment in December to match winter demand.
