Menorca car limit faces fast-track vote

A proposed limit on vehicles on Menorca could be in place next season if the Balearic Parliament speeds through a change to the island’s Biosphere Reserve Law. The PP lodged its request for an urgent procedure on Friday, 11 September. It says the move would give the Island Council of Menorca the legal powers needed to enforce the cap.

The council approved the legal change on 2 September, and the Balearic Government Council has since issued a favourable report. The proposal now goes before Parliament for further debate and a final vote.

Deadlines could be cut in half

An urgent procedure would halve the deadlines set for parliamentary stages. Salomé Cabrera, the PP’s Menorca spokeswoman and an MP, called on other parties to back the faster route.

She said traffic on Menorca’s roads reaches the island’s capacity limits at certain times of year. The proposed cap is intended to protect residents’ quality of life, safeguard the island and match tourism activity to Menorca’s real capacity.

The PP says the restriction will become a reality next season. Parliament must first decide whether to grant the urgent procedure, then approve the legal amendment.
