Mallorca's Muro care home: 49 places in handover talks

In Muro, Mallorca, the 49-place Reina Sofía care home could get a new public manager: Mallorca Island Council and Muro Town Council are examining a handover to the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS). Their joint committee held its first working meeting on Monday, 28 September 2026.

The committee was set up in May. It will now look at arrangements for residents and staff, along with other steps needed for a possible handover. The aim is to keep care running throughout. No transfer has been agreed.

Guillermo Sánchez, president of the institute and councillor for social welfare, said the work must take account of residents, their families and care staff. If the handover goes ahead, the home would join the institute’s network, keeping public care for older people available locally.

Separately, the institute’s 2026 grant programme has five million euros to cover the full deficits declared by six centres, including the Muro home. The funding would also help sustain 256 public care home places.
