Mallorca plans port number plate checks

Mallorca plans to check the number plates of cars arriving at the island’s ports of Palma and Alcúdia. On Tuesday, 29 September, the Consell de Mallorca asked Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) for access to registration records for the checks. The request is part of a proposed law to limit the number of vehicles entering the island.

What the checks would show

The records would show almost immediately whether a car is registered outside Mallorca and, if so, in which Spanish region or country. That would help officials distinguish residents’ vehicles from those authorised to enter.

The Consell and the traffic authority agreed to work out how they would share data and check vehicles. They already cooperate on vehicle inspections, known in Spain as ITV.

The vehicle limit is still undecided

The law is before parliament. Fernando Rubio, the Consell’s councillor for mobility, hopes it will pass between October and November, allowing the rules to start next tourist season. No limit on vehicle entries has been set: the Consell has asked a specialist mobility firm to study how much traffic the island can handle.

The meeting also covered traffic restrictions at Formentor. The traffic authority already applies restrictions there with the Consell de Mallorca, the Balearic government and Pollença council.
