Mallorca nursery places: 16 babies miss out in Sa Pobla

Sixteen babies in Sa Pobla, Mallorca, miss out on public nursery places for under-ones: the local Socialist Party plans to demand more places at the next council meeting. The party set out its plan on 27 September. It says the families have no workable public alternative in the town.

According to Socialist councillor Xesca Mir, both the Escoleta Municipal Huialfàs and Escoleta Confits nurseries are full. She says some families face giving up work or taking their child to another town, where the nursery place would not fit their working hours. Free nursery education for children aged 0 to 3 needs enough places to go with it, she argues.

The party says schools under construction in Sa Pobla could include classrooms for children aged 0 to 3 if the Balearic Government’s Department of Education and Universities plans suitable space. Mir wants an immediate answer for the 16 families. The party has not said whether or when extra places will become available.
