Madrid urged to fund Palma-Llucmajor train

Mallorca’s government is pressing Madrid to pay for a new train line between Palma and Llucmajor, with a planned stop at Son Sant Joan Airport. Housing, Territory and Mobility Minister José Luis Mateo raised the demand in Palma on Wednesday, after officials from the Balearic Government and the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility met on Tuesday. It was the technical group’s second meeting, held a year and a half after the first.

The Govern wants the rail agreement restored and state funding secured for expanding Mallorca’s network. Mateo said the project should also seek money from the European Union and Palma airport.

Airport and hospital stops planned

The Palma-Llucmajor line is also planned to call at Son Llàtzer Hospital. Its planning stage has been completed with final approval of the information study.

Since June, work has been under way on the basic and executive designs, the detailed plans needed before the project can move forward.

Mateo said the Balearic Government had already sent the Ministry documents on the Llucmajor line last year and again this year. It has also submitted material on the Sa Pobla-Alcúdia rail link, metro projects to Son Espases Hospital and Son Serra Parera, and work on a Manacor-Artà line.

He said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had promised Balearic President Marga Prohens regular talks and the technical group two years ago. Mateo criticised Transport Minister Óscar Puente for missing the latest meeting, saying Madrid must now turn words into action.
