Palma ring road works begin this year

Work on Palma’s planned second ring road at Coll d’en Rabassa is due to begin before the end of the year. The route will link the Ma-19 motorway from Llucmajor with the Ma-13 road towards Inca, aiming to ease access into the city. The Council of Mallorca presented the project on Wednesday with Balearic Government president Marga Prohens and Palma mayor Jaime Martínez.

The scheme has been stalled for a decade. It is intended to take pressure off Palma’s existing ring road, the Vía de Cintura, which carries 185,000 vehicles a day.

Link first, then almost 1 km of tunnel

The first stage will create a connection to the Levante motorway and move the road farther from homes on Carrer Cardenal Rossell. It has a budget of €90 million and is expected to take two years and eight months.

A second stage would bring an almost 1 km tunnel and a green area, at a planned cost of €260 million. That section is scheduled for three years and three months, although the two stages could overlap and shorten the overall construction period.

Space held for a future rail stop

The plans also reserve land for a future stop on the rail connection to Migjorn de Mallorca, tying the new road into public-transport planning.

Council president Llorenç Galmés said Spain’s central government was withholding €350 million intended for Mallorca under the roads agreement. Prohens pointed to a separate €30 million agreement between the Balearic Government and the Council of Mallorca, funding work on 17 transport infrastructures to improve access to Palma, road safety and traffic flow.
