€350m Palma ring road sparks protest

Children at CEIP Rodamilans in Sineu, Mallorca, cross a zebra crossing every day that drivers do not respect, neighbourhood groups say. On Thursday, 17 September, the groups tied that complaint to the Consell de Mallorca’s €350m second ring road project for Palma. They say people in the island’s interior still have no option but to drive to the capital.

The groups say they asked the Mallorca Island Council to tackle the Sineu crossing ten months ago and are still waiting. They accuse the council of putting cars before people.

In Campos, they describe the road through the town as a “black spot” for the council. Rather than calming traffic and making the route safe, they say the proposed answer is a new road that bypasses the town.

Consell president Llorenç Galmés presented the Palma project two years ago with a €110m price tag, the groups say. They blame the rise to €350m on a tunnel intended to put the road underground.

They also say the council has given no estimate for the number of vehicles the new route would take off the Via de Cintura, Palma’s Ma-20 ring road. The campaigners believe it will remove none.

The groups point to 913 vehicles for every 1,000 people in the Balearics, the highest figure in Spain. In the Part Forana, they say, a car is essential to reach work or a doctor.
