Palma road plan: MÉS attacks €350m second ring
Palma’s proposed second ring road carries a €350 million price tag for its first stretch, prompting MÉS per Mallorca to accuse the Partido Popular of burdening Mallorca’s future again. The party’s councillor Joan Llodrà made the criticism in Palma on Thursday, targeting the priorities of the PP-led Mallorca Council. He says the scheme will not tackle the island’s reliance on private cars.
Call to spend on public transport
Llodrà said Mallorca could not remain locked into a transport model of more roads, more cars and more congestion. He urged authorities to put public money into what he called real alternatives to driving, including public transport.
People should be able to get to work, study or travel elsewhere without being forced to take a car, he said. Instead, he accused the PP of spending heavily on more asphalt.
Warning over extra traffic
MÉS also challenged the Balearic Government and Mallorca Council’s portrayal of the project as an answer to road congestion. Llodrà said they had not explained how they would stop extra road capacity from drawing more traffic.
If building roads is the only response, Mallorca will remain trapped in the same cycle, he warned. He also said infrastructure of this kind shapes the island’s future, reinforces an unsustainable way of getting around and makes it harder to plan land use around people’s needs.
