Palma cyclist crash: e-scooter rider hurt

An e-scooter rider was left unable to move their foot after a head-on collision with a teenage cyclist on Palma’s Paseo Marítimo on 12 September. The crash happened at about 22.10 on Avenida de Gabriel Roca, where the e-scooter was travelling correctly in the cycle lane towards Portopí. Palma Local Police say the cyclist, a minor, returned 0.66 mg/l in a breath alcohol test.

Police say the cyclist crossed from the far side of the road and suddenly entered the cycle lane against the direction of travel. A witness and the injured rider said the teenager was doing a wheelie — riding with the bicycle’s front wheel raised — before striking the e-scooter head-on. The cyclist said instead that the front wheel turned at the kerb before the collision.

A patrol called an ambulance for the e-scooter rider, who was taken to a medical centre with a possible fracture and several bruises. As a bicycle is not a motor vehicle, the case is being dealt with administratively. Police have filed reports over alleged riding under the influence of alcohol and negligent riding causing a crash, while UVAC has completed its report to establish possible responsibility.
