Mallorca parking signs urged to drop ‘minusválidos’
Reserved parking signs in Maria de la Salut, Mallorca, still use the word ‘minusválidos’. On Monday, 7 September, the local PSIB socialist group asked the town council to remove it from the signs and update the road markings.
The party wants the bays to be marked clearly for ‘personas con discapacidad’ — people with disabilities — or ‘personas con movilidad reducida’, people with reduced mobility. It also wants signs and road paint to carry the international accessibility symbol.
Toni Moreno, secretary-general of the PSIB group in Maria de la Salut, said language in public spaces matters. He said institutions should lead on respect and inclusion.
Moreno pointed to the reform of Article 49 of Spain’s Constitution, which he said established broad agreement on leaving outdated terms behind. The socialists called the change a simple but necessary step.
