Mallorca drivers face phone checks as cameras watch

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, drivers face checks for distractions from Monday, 5 October: a nationwide campaign runs until Sunday, 11 October, and roadside cameras can spot mobile phone use. Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic says Guardia Civil traffic officers, along with regional and local police forces that join the campaign, will check roads in towns and beyond.

Officers will carry out roadside checks as well as using cameras. In the Balearic Islands, volunteers from the National Federation of People with Spinal Injuries and Other Physical Disabilities (ASPAYM) will accompany officers at checkpoints. The group has worked with the traffic authority on driver awareness campaigns since 2007.

The authority says distraction contributed to 15,707 crashes, or 21% of the total. It was also a factor in 444 fatal crashes, accounting for 32%. Mobile phones are among the most common sources of distraction for drivers.
