Palma's Plaza Mayor revamp to expose underground galleries

Palma, Mallorca, plans to expose part of the underground galleries beneath Plaza Mayor: work on the square is due to begin in the first quarter of 2027. Palma City Council spokesman Llorenç Bauzá set out the plans on Wednesday after a council executive meeting.

The project, called Ágora, aims to bring the galleries back into use and make the square feel less like a basement. The new space could host cultural and commercial activities. A City Interpretation Centre is also planned there as the hub of a network of exhibition spaces.

The council wants to make it easier to move between Plaza Mayor and La Rambla, which sit at different levels, but Bauzá did not say how it would do that. The budget is more than 1.4 million euros. The timetable allows 46 months from drawing up the project to carrying out the work.

Asked about possible concerns among nearby restaurants and shops, Bauzá said Plaza Mayor residents had called for the revamp. He said residents had backed the project through their representatives on the judging panel for the design competition. The council would take questions and complaints from local businesses and residents, he added.
