Mallorca: Police report 7,000 arrests across Balearics
In Palma, Mallorca, Spain’s National Police report that they have arrested 7,000 people across the Balearic Islands for criminal activity since the start of the year. Regional police chief José Antonio Puebla gives the figure on Wednesday, 7 October, at a ceremony at La Misericòrdia. He says the force has achieved good results despite difficult conditions.
More officers across the islands
Puebla points to an operation against drug trafficking on Mallorca this week. He also names organised crime, technology-related offences and high tourist occupancy among the pressures on the force. Conditions around irregular migration are particularly difficult on Eivissa and Formentera, he says.
The National Police now have more than 2,000 officers across the Balearic Islands. Alfonso Rodríguez, the Spanish government’s representative in the islands, says the increase in officers helped the summer season pass without serious incidents.
Medals in Palma
At the ceremony, 40 National Police officers in Palma receive police merit medals. Four retired officers are also honoured, while ten other people receive medals for their work with the force.
