Mallorca rail crossing: €4.4m bridge set to replace it
A €4.4 million bridge is planned to replace the rail crossing at Camí des Moliners in Santa Maria, Mallorca. It will link both sides of the Palma–Inca railway without traffic crossing the tracks. The project went on public display on Saturday, and people will have 30 days from Sunday to inspect the plans and submit objections.
A bend with little sight of trains
The crossing sits on a curve where visibility is restricted. Trains pass through at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
Latest counts put traffic at about 400 vehicles and around 50 pedestrians a day. The Department of Housing, Territory and Mobility says removing the crossing will improve safety for road users, pedestrians and train services.
Bridge, ramps and a roundabout
The new 260-metre route will run above the existing Camí des Moliners and join the Ma-13A. Ramps will lead up to a 10-metre-wide metal bridge, also 10 metres wide.
Plans include a roundabout 30 metres across to reorganise the junction and ease access for nearby residents. Earthworks, paving, drainage, utility diversions and new signs are also included.
Once the consultation ends and any objections have been considered, the administrative process for the works will continue. Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca will then have 23 rail crossings on its network, including 12 used by vehicles; it is also working to remove crossings in Consell and Binissalem.
