Mallorca car trips: Ibiza wants rules for residents
Mallorca residents taking their cars to Ibiza could get a separate rule: Ibiza has proposed a different approach for ordinary journeys between the Balearic Islands. Mariano Juan, first vice-president of the Ibiza Island Council, put the idea to the Balearic Parliament on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. It would cover residents travelling between Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca, while keeping vehicle limits and checks in place.
13,750 fewer cars unloaded in Ibiza
Ibiza’s port recorded 183,190 passenger-vehicle movements from May to August 2026, down from 217,135 in the same months of 2024, the island council said. That is a fall of 15.6%.
The number of passenger cars unloaded fell from 97,438 to 83,688 — a drop of 13,750. Juan said the decline was 7.5% in May and 20.1% in August.
What the proposal means for Mallorca
Juan said Ibiza had paired its vehicle limits with more than €40 million of road infrastructure work and a new public transport service. Its bus network recorded 4,958,831 journeys from April to August 2026, up 26.4% on 2025.
Mallorca and Menorca are considering their own vehicle rules, and Juan offered them technical, administrative and legal help. His proposal would distinguish ordinary trips by island residents from tourist vehicle movements. It would not remove checks or limits on vehicle numbers.
