Mallorca water link: Sa Pobla votes down pipe proposal
In Sa Pobla, Mallorca, a planned drinking-water link hits a setback: the governing coalition votes down a People’s Party (PP) proposal for the council to lay pipework. The PP criticises the vote on 29 September 2026, saying the council had already committed to its part of the work with public water body Abaqua.
The proposal called for pipes to run from the water plant to an agreed connection point. PP spokesperson Pedrona Seguí says she cannot understand why the mayor signed a commitment with Abaqua only for his coalition to reject the council’s part of the work.
The PP points to an agreement signed by the Balearic regional government and Sa Pobla council on 22 May 2025. The project includes a storage tank holding 6,000 cubic metres, a pumping station and about 3,200 metres of pipe.
The coalition comprises Independents per Sa Pobla, MÉS per Sa Pobla, PSOE and Coalició per Mallorca. According to the PP, the council debate exposed differences between the partners over bringing desalinated water to the town. The party argues that the link would help secure future supplies and ease pressure on groundwater. Whether the council will now carry out the pipework remains unclear.
