Palma school assistants demand 12-month contracts

Technical educational support assistants, known as ATE, will gather outside the Ministry of Education and Universities in Palma at 10.00 on Tuesday. They are demanding better working conditions and greater recognition for their work in schools.

The CSIF union, which is backing the protest, says CCOO, STEI, UGT, ANPE and USO also support the rally.

The assistants want their role to be professionally reclassified, with training that matches the responsibilities they take on. They also want to be assigned to one school, saying this would bring more job stability, help work-life balance and give them equal access to transfer competitions.

Their demands include 12-month contracts, an end to contracts for exceptional circumstances and the creation of permanent posts to provide stable support. They are also calling for a hazard allowance and for duties to be adapted during working hours for staff aged 55 and over.

The works council says the dispute is not only about staff conditions. It says the demands directly affect the quality of educational and support care received by pupils with specific needs.
