Balearics: Parliament demands more cash for school books

The Parliament of the Balearic Islands has called on Spain’s government to increase funding for school books and teaching materials, saying the current sums are insufficient for the archipelago’s needs. PP parliamentarian Maria de Lluc Fornas presented the proposal on Thursday at the Education and Universities Committee in Palma. It argues that the existing allocation does not properly account for the islands’ territorial, demographic and socioeconomic circumstances.

New formula for funding

Parliament also wants the Balearic Government to press the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training for a review of how the money is distributed. The new formula should better reflect the territorial and educational reality of the Balearics.

It has also asked Spain’s government to use alternative measures of economic vulnerability when dividing the funds. These include the poverty-risk rate with imputed rent, which the proposal says would better capture the different socioeconomic circumstances across Spain’s autonomous communities.

Schools and music centres

The committee also approved every point in a separate proposal from Socialist parliamentarian Àlex Pitaluga on coordinating guidance services at schools, conservatoires and municipal music schools.

Parliament called on the Balearic Government to work with those bodies to improve the early identification, monitoring and support of pupils. Teachers should have clear, safe and respectful ways to report difficulties or risk situations.

The proposal also seeks basic guidance for contacting educational advisers when vulnerabilities are identified, closer coordination with the schools attended by those pupils and a permanent educational adviser role in music conservatoires.
