Mallorca school sports hall heat sparks fan call

On Mallorca, heat in the sports hall at IES Sineu puts pupils, athletes and spectators at risk, the local PSOE warns, especially older people. On Tuesday, 29 September, the party said it had filed a motion calling for urgent action at the school in Sineu. Its spokesman, José Manuel García, said the sun’s heat and the hall’s design make conditions unsuitable for healthy sport.

The PSOE wants Sineu council to pay for industrial fans, or help fund them, in coordination with the Education Department. García said similar ventilation measures have worked in Inca, Alcúdia and Pollença. The party also wants Ibisec to stop delaying an already approved project to cover the school’s outdoor courts.

For a longer-term answer to the heat, the party is calling for a study of sustainable cooling that could use or expand the school’s existing solar installations. That could allow it to seek support from the Balearic Energy Institute or programmes for places people can use to escape high temperatures.

García said the proposals fit a new municipal plan for such places, which is due to be presented to the council. He called the measures a matter of public health, not a luxury.
