Palma second ring will not beat traffic, groups warn

Palma’s proposed second ring will not ease traffic jams or take cars off the Vía de Cintura, seven groups have warned. On 19 September, they rejected the scheme intended to link the motorways at Llucmajor and Inca. They say it conflicts with the Consell de Mallorca’s own mobility plan.

The Association of Train Users, Vianants Mallorca, Terraferida, Amics de la Terra, Plataforma Anti-Autopista, Plataforma Maria poble petit and Sineu en Bici i a Peu issued the warning in a joint statement.

They argued that putting part of the route underground would only hide cars, not remove them. Adding more lanes would not end congestion in the long term either, they said, because those lanes would eventually fill with more vehicles.

The groups said the major project would therefore fail to draw traffic away from Palma’s Vía de Cintura.
