Mallorca restaurants face worst September start in memory

Mallorca’s restaurants are facing the worst opening week of September their trade body can recall. On 10 September, Restauración Mallorca CAEB, the restaurant group within the Confederation of Balearic Business Associations, said alarm bells were ringing across the sector. Its president, Juan Miguel Ferrer, said the first week of the month had been exceptionally poor.

The final two weeks of August were also weak and worse than the same period last year, Ferrer said. They failed to revive a month whose first fortnight had already disappointed restaurant owners.

September has traditionally been a stronger period for the trade. It usually brings a type of visitor who avoids the biggest July and August tourist concentrations and is expected to have more money to spend.

This year, Restauración Mallorca CAEB says that expected spending is not reaching restaurants. The association believes the problem lies less in how many people arrive on Mallorca than in what they can and want to spend once they are on the island.

Ferrer said the figures underline the difference between tourist footfall and whether businesses make money from it.
