113 solar panels power four Mallorca treatment plants

The 113 solar panels now installed at four wastewater treatment plants in Mallorca are set to reduce how much electricity the sites take from the grid. On 19 September, the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency, Abaqua, said it had completed the work in Ariany, Sant Joan, Lloret de Vistalegre and Llubí. The power generated will run the plants’ own wastewater treatment systems.

Ariany has the biggest solar array

The largest installation is at the Mancomunada del Pla treatment plant in Ariany, Mallorca. The site also serves Sineu, Petra and Maria de la Salut.

It has 74 panels rated at 645 watts each and a 50 kW three-phase inverter. In the best weather conditions, the plant can produce between 200 and 250 kWh a day.

Three more plants get on-site power

Sant Joan and Lloret de Vistalegre have each received 12 panels and a 10 kW three-phase inverter. Their maximum daily output is estimated at between 25 and 35 kWh apiece in optimum conditions.

Llubí has 15 panels split into two groups, with a 10 kW three-phase inverter. Its estimated maximum output is between 35 and 45 kWh a day.

The inverters send the power straight into the treatment plants and can halt the flow when needed, preventing electricity from being fed into the outside grid. The work follows Abaqua’s recent installation of 78 panels at Eivissa’s main wastewater pumping station, where more than 61,000 kWh a year is expected for use on site.
