Mallorca: €1.2m to complete delayed Son Fornés centre

A further €1.2 million is set to take the long-delayed Son Fornés centre in Montuïri, Mallorca, to completion. The money comes from the sustainable tourism tax, known locally as ITS, and is intended for the archaeological heritage research and documentation centre. Montuïri’s People’s Party (PP) welcomed the funding on 11 September.

Son Fornés had already received ITS funding in 2017, alongside contributions from other institutions and bodies. But years of delays and mounting problems have left the work unfinished.

PP spokeswoman Maria Elena Jaume said the new allocation could finally unlock a project central to Montuïri’s history, culture and heritage. After such a long wait, she said, local people deserved to see the centre completed and operating.

Jaume blamed the municipal administration for failing to finish the project with the funds first available. She said a scheme launched almost a decade ago should not still be awaiting completion or need another cash injection.

According to the PP, the project lacked proper follow-up, planning and firm management for years. The new ITS funding is now intended to bring the centre to an end.
