Jesús speed camera planned after Estruç traffic surge
A speed camera will be installed in Calle Estruç in Jesús, Ibiza, after neighbours reported a marked increase in traffic and vehicles travelling too fast.
Santa Eulària Council announced the move on 10 September after meeting people living on the street. They said the new traffic layout had brought more vehicles into their road and that they should have been given more information before the changes began.
The camera is intended to monitor traffic and allow action over unsuitable speeds.
Keeping through-traffic out of Jesús
The changes are part of a pilot scheme to pedestrianise and calm the centre of Jesús. The council says the aim is to stop drivers with no destination in Jesús from cutting through the centre.
Vehicles travelling to or from Cap Martinet should use outer routes whenever possible. The council says traffic removed from the centre should not simply be pushed into Calle Estruç and other residential streets.
Counts underway until September's end
Heavy vehicles were also discussed at the meeting. Cap Martinet already has restrictions on this type of traffic, and the council says it will keep working to prevent Calle Estruç from taking traffic that can use outer routes.
One option under consideration is restoring two-way traffic in Calle Tucán. That could make journeys to and from Cap Martinet easier and ease pressure on Calle Estruç.
Vehicle counts and other traffic data are being collected on the affected streets during the pilot. The trial is due to continue until the end of September.
