Maó speed camera row over €150,067

A €150,067 bill for three speed cameras is at the centre of a row in Maó, Menorca. On Friday, the local PP called on Mayor Héctor Pons to demand the money back from Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). The town hall paid for the devices before the DGT took over responsibility for them.

The PP says the cameras were installed on roads outside municipal control. It points to central government replies to questions from Menorca senator Cristóbal Marqués, which it says show the DGT does not plan to repay Maó for the investment.

PP spokesperson Virginia Victori wants Pons to set out what he has done since the DGT assumed control, which claims he has made for the money and what he will do after the traffic authority’s refusal. She said the €150,000 belonged to Maó’s citizens and should return to the town hall’s coffers.
