Balearic storm triggers 109 emergency call-outs
The Balearic Islands Emergency Coordination Centre had handled 109 incidents caused by rain and wind across the Balearic Islands, Spain, by 10am on Friday, 21 August. Mallorca recorded 41 call-outs and Menorca 48, while Eivissa had 15 and Formentera three.
Menorca records the highest number of incidents
In Mallorca, 11 incidents were reported in Manacor, Mallorca, and 10 in Felanitx, Mallorca. Calvià and Sant Llorenç each recorded three.
Menorca had the largest number of incidents, with 24 in Maó, 11 in Alaior and six in Sant Lluís. On Eivissa, Sant Josep recorded six incidents and Santa Eulària four.
Fallen trees account for most call-outs
Fallen trees were the most frequent problem, accounting for 49 incidents. Emergency teams also dealt with 14 cases of falling urban debris, nine disruptions to basic services, nine obstructions or liquids on roads, six potential falling-object hazards and six drifting boats. Two incidents involved flooding in buildings or businesses.
Thirty incidents remained open early on Friday, including 14 fallen trees, seven cases of falling debris, six basic-service disruptions in Formentera, Alaior, Sant Llorenç and Maó, and one fire.
Mallorca firefighters removed fallen trees in Son Ferrer in Calvià, Manacor, Felanitx, S'Illot, Cala Pi in Llucmajor and Camí de Can Patró in Manacor.
