Mallorca rain and storm warning: 20 litres in an hour
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, could see 20 litres of rain per square metre in an hour on Sunday, 4 October: a yellow warning for rain and thunderstorms covers the island’s north, north-east and Serra de Tramuntana from 12.00 to 20.00. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has placed all of Menorca under the same warning for those hours. At midday, the Balearic Islands emergency service extended its own yellow alert to the whole archipelago and urged people to take care.
Rain and storms have already brought 49 litres per square metre to Eivissa and 18 litres per square metre to Formentera over the past two days. Aemet says those totals amount, on average, to about half the rain the islands usually get in an entire October.
For homes at risk of flooding, the 112 emergency service advises securing doors and windows and moving indoors anything water could carry away. If water enters a home, people should avoid basements and garages, stay in higher areas and turn off the electricity at the main switch. Drivers should slow down, keep their distance and use main routes.
The wet spell is set to continue at the start of the week. Aemet plans another yellow rain warning for Eivissa and Formentera from 00.00 to 06.00.
