TIB bus accident in Valldemossa kills Syrian tourist

A 36-year-old Syrian tourist died after a TIB bus knocked down a street lamp at a stop in Valldemossa, Mallorca, at about 15.40 on Monday, 17 August. The lamp fell onto passengers who had just left the vehicle.

Emergency service SAMU 061 said the man died at the scene. The bus was operating route 203, which links Port de Sóller and Palma via Deià and Valldemossa, when it was manoeuvring away from the stop.

The Guardia Civil is investigating and intends to take statements from witnesses. Sources close to the inquiry said the driver is also expected to undergo alcohol and drug tests, as is standard in road collisions.

The victim’s partner, a woman aged about 30, was treated for an anxiety crisis. A 42-year-old Mallorca resident suffered chest injuries, while the driver received medical help after a panic attack. All three were taken to Hospital Juaneda; one was in a less serious condition and two had minor injuries.

The Mallorca Transport Consortium and the bus operator said they would assist the Guardia Civil investigation. The regional government offered its condolences following the death.

Because the road was closed, Valldemossa stops one and two were taken out of service that afternoon. TIB set up a temporary replacement stop on Bartomeu Ferrà street and suspended the express route 203 service between Palma and Valldemossa in both directions until further notice.
