Mallorca tourism chief calls bishop a hypocrite

Mallorca’s tourism minister accuses the island’s bishop of hypocrisy on 2 November: Jaume Bauzá says the Church earns money from tourism while Sebastià Taltavull condemns its excesses. Bauzá’s post on X follows an article by Taltavull in Ara Balears criticising mass tourism and the destruction of land.

Bauzá points to cyclists riding up to the sanctuary of Lluc on Mallorca. He says the bishop objects to them, although the sanctuary welcomed cyclists not long ago. He also challenges Taltavull’s concern about cruise ships, saying a substantial share of their passengers visit La Seu.

The minister then raises 268 places marketed at the Lluc sanctuary. They are the subject of proceedings over alleged irregularities. Bauzá says the Church has the right to warn about tourism’s excesses, but should apply the same moral standards to activities that bring it income.
