Mallorca camp offers 20 Ukrainian children respite from war
Mallorca: a camp in Cala Millor gives around 20 Ukrainian children two weeks of rest and psychological support. Each has a parent who was killed or went missing while serving in the war. The children arrived on 13 October and are due to return to Ukraine on Sunday.
They are the first Ukrainian group to attend W Camp, organised by the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in the Balearic Islands and the association Tryzub.
Games, trips and time to talk
The children have played sports and games, gone on excursions and taken part in group therapy. Educators, therapists and psychologists have helped them talk about fear and uncertainty, and work through how to cope with change and aggression.
During a visit to the honorary consulate, honorary consul Volodymyr Nosov gave each child a games console. He said two weeks cannot erase what they have been through, though some children have shown clear improvement.
The return to Ukraine
Nosov said the children will return to cities where they will again face air raid alerts and missile and drone attacks. That is why, he said, the stay is more than a seaside holiday: it gives them time somewhere safe, with adults ready to help.
Tryzub and the honorary consulate want to make the programme permanent so more Ukrainian children can receive psychological support. Work on a second group for W Camp is already under way.
