Mallorca water link plans target 5,000 m3 for Sa Pobla

Sa Pobla has requested 5,000 m3 of drinking water a day from Mallorca’s main water network. On 16 September, the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency, Abaqua, put the design work for the link out to tender. The scheme also covers Can Picafort, in Santa Margalida, which has asked for 10,000 m3 a day.

The €493,742 contract is split into two lots, one for each project. The winning firms will have six months to draw up the plans.

New storage and pipes for Sa Pobla

Sa Pobla’s proposed link includes a 6,000 m3 storage reservoir on the edge of the town, a pumping station and about 3,200 metres of 350-millimetre ductile cast-iron pipe. The reservoir is also intended to supply Alcúdia in the near future.

Can Picafort link runs 6,400 metres

Can Picafort’s project calls for a pumping station beside the existing Son Sant Joan reservoir. It would also include about 6,400 metres of 500-millimetre pressure pipe and a new 8,000 m3 reservoir near the town centre.

The design work will include a 3D digital record of the existing installations. Companies have until 19 October 2026 at 19.00 to submit bids.

The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle says the projects, alongside the planned expansion of Alcúdia’s desalination plant, are aimed at tackling current supply-quality problems in Sa Pobla and Santa Margalida. Water delivered through the Abaqua network would replace unsustainable groundwater extraction with desalinated water, helping protect aquifers.
