Wine alliance targets Spanish bars and restaurants
Spanish bars and restaurants are set for more wine training under a new alliance signed in Requena, Valencia, on Monday. Hostelería de España, the Spanish Wine Federation and the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation have joined forces to put wine knowledge at the heart of hospitality. The deal was signed at Requena Town Hall, with the town holding the title of Spanish Wine City 2026.
The partners want staff in hotels, restaurants and cafés — known collectively as the Horeca sector — to know more about wine. They say better knowledge can help staff guide customers, run service more efficiently and improve the dining experience.
The alliance sets out six areas for joint work: staff training, food-and-wine tourism, environmental, social and economic sustainability, responsible drinking, support for tapeo’s bid for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, and projects linked to rural and inland Spain.
Bars and restaurants are central to the plan because they can introduce customers to new wine regions and labels. The organisations also want producers, protected wine appellations and hospitality businesses to work more closely, creating food-and-wine offers that could broaden tourism and bring economic opportunities to rural areas.
The partnership links wine with the region, culture, food and hospitality represented by Requena. It also backs a wine culture centred on moderation, quality, food and respect for the environment.
