Sant Joan sits at 161 meters elevation in the southern part of the Plà de Mallorca, at the edge of the island's broad central plain where the terrain begins to rise gently toward Porreres and Llucmajor. This position in the elevated interior shapes the small town's weather: no coastal influence from any direction, and the Mediterranean continental climate in its most pronounced form.
Summers in Sant Joan are warm to hot. July daytime highs reach around 31°C according to Aggregator climate data, with daily averages around 25°C. Heat waves that occasionally grip the island interior in August are felt here as well. July is the driest month, averaging around 9 mm of precipitation. Annual rainfall totals around 450 mm, similar to the Palma coast according to AEMET (449 mm). The autumn rains arrive mainly in November, with around 79 mm.
Winters are somewhat cooler than in lower-lying inland areas due to the elevation. The daily average in January is around 10°C. Nighttime cold is more pronounced in the open terrain of the southern Plà than in more sheltered valleys; frost is rare but possible.
For walks through the quiet hill country between Sineu, Sant Joan, and Porreres, October and April offer the most pleasant conditions. The traditional Thursday market takes place outdoors in spring and autumn as well.
