Palma airport protest targets new routes and tourism cash

Campaigners will take to the streets in Palma, Mallorca, on Sunday to demand an end to public funding for tourism promotion and the opening of new air routes. The protest starts at 18.00 outside the Delegation of the Spanish Government in the Balearic Islands. It is being called by the Platform Against the Expansion of Palma Airport, with social, environmental and neighbourhood groups set to join.

The platform says the march is “more necessary than ever”. It wants people to reject any project by airport operator Aena or the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility that would raise the capacity of Son Sant Joan airport.

The groups will give further details of the march at a press conference on Saturday. They also back a law on joint airport management that would allow the Balearic Government to regulate “carrying capacity” and begin a “reduction”.
