Cita Previa at the DGT Palma: Appointments for driving licence and vehicle
Anyone living in Mallorca who needs to convert their German driving licence or re-register a vehicle can't avoid the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico in Palma. And that's exactly where the first real frustration begins for many expats: the Cita previa DGT Palma is notoriously hard to get, appointments disappear within seconds, and the website doesn't always respond reliably. In this guide you'll learn where the authority is located, what channels exist for booking an appointment, for which procedures you actually need a Cita, which insider trick helps with online booking, and what you can do if there simply isn't a free slot left.

Do you actually need a Cita Previa?
Not every visit to the DGT necessarily requires a pre-booked appointment. As a general rule: before appearing in person at a Jefatura or Oficina de Tráfico, you should apply for a cita previa. For certain procedures, however, you can turn up directly without an appointment and take a number at the kiosk on site.
| Type of procedure | Cita previa required? |
|---|---|
| Converting your driving licence (Canje) | Yes |
| Re-registering a vehicle (Matriculación) | Yes |
| Certain simple enquiries/collections as listed in the DGT catalogue | Partly no, direct attendance possible |
| Online/telematic procedures via the Sede Electrónica | No Cita needed, as no office visit required |
| Procedures for businesses and other mandatory groups (since 1 March 2021) | Cita system blocked for this group, other channels mandatory |
Note: Since 1 March 2021, booking an appointment via the Cita previa system has been reserved exclusively for private individuals and their representatives. Companies and certain mandatory groups must use other electronic channels.
Before you even start looking for a Cita, it's worth taking a look at the DGT's catalogue of telematic services – many procedures can be completed entirely online, with no appointment needed and no trip to Palma.
How to book an appointment online
The Sede Electrónica of the DGT (sede.dgt.gob.es) is the official way to request a Cita previa. In practice, the process itself is simple, but availability is the real bottleneck.

- Go to the Sede Electrónica of the DGT and select "Solicitud de cita previa".
- Select the Jefatura Provincial de Mallorca as the responsible authority.
- Specify the desired Trámite (e.g. Canje de permiso de conducir or Matriculación).
- Enter your personal details and contact information.
- Check the calendar for available days and select a slot.
- Confirm the Cita and note down the reference number – you can view or cancel the appointment at any time via the app or the portal.
By law, the DGT is required to offer you an appointment as soon as possible, but no later than within 15 days of your request. In practice, however, it's common on Mallorca to find the calendars fully booked, with the message "el horario de atención al cliente está completo" appearing.
The 10 o'clock trick: how to boost your chances
A practical tip often mentioned in Palma: new appointment slots at the DGT are frequently released at 10:00 in the morning. Anyone who has already prepared all the form data in the Sede Electrónica shortly before 10:00 and clicks "Aceptar" exactly on the hour increases their chance of catching fresh appointments before they're snapped up by other users.
Note: Keep all your details – NIE number, passport number, contact information – ready to hand so you don't lose a single second once the window opens.
Alternative channels: phone, app and in-person visits
In addition to online booking, the DGT officially lists several channels for appointment scheduling:
| Channel | Description |
|---|---|
| Sin certificado (online without certificate) | Appointment booking via the Sede Electrónica using basic details |
| miDGT app | Available on Google Play and the App Store, allows appointments and other procedures to be handled on mobile |
| By phone | Via the phone number 060 |
| Presencial | Direct in-person visit for procedures that don't require a Cita |
Attention: In practice, phone booking via 060 has at times been available only to a limited extent. If in doubt, rely on online booking or the app as your main channel.
If you'd rather avoid the hunting and hoping for free slots, there are also specialised local Gestorías who can handle the process telematically for you – without you having to chase a Cita yourself. This does come with a service fee, but it saves time and nerves, especially when a deadline is approaching.
Cita Previa for exchanging your driving licence (Canje)
Anyone living permanently on Mallorca will sooner or later need to exchange their German driving licence for a Spanish document. For unlimited German driving licences (pink, grey, or the old card format without an expiry date), a deadline of no later than two years after registering the Residencia or the Empadronamiento generally applies.
| Position | Cost (guide price) |
|---|---|
| DGT official fee (Tasa) | 28,87 € |
| Health test (Centro de Reconocimiento) | approx. 30–65 € |
| Full-service gestoría package (optional) | approx. 169 € incl. IVA |
Note: Your German driving licence is irrevocably retained at the DGT appointment. Plan enough lead time before you'll need the Spanish document.
You'll find more on deadlines, documents and the process in the guide Converting your driving licence.
Cita Previa for re-registering your vehicle
If you bring your car from Germany, a clear deadline for re-registering it with Spanish number plates (Matriculación de vehículo importado) begins as soon as you register your Residencia – this too is a process that requires an appointment with the DGT.
| Situation | Deadline / regulation |
|---|---|
| Resident, re-registering vehicle | 30 days from Residencia registration, extension of up to 2 months possible on request |
| Non-resident | Vehicle usable in Spain for a maximum of 180 days per calendar year, after which export or re-registration is required |
| Breach of the deadline | Fines typically between 200 and 500 € possible, in extreme cases temporary impoundment |
Note:Since 2025 the DGT has pursued a stricter zero-tolerance approach for expired ITV and missing registration. With an expired ITV you are no longer allowed to drive to the test centre yourself on the appointment day – the vehicle must be towed.
You can read the details of the full re-registration process in the guide Registering a car in Spain as well as Importing & re-registering a car. For the technical inspection itself you'll find appointments and locations in the guide ITV (MOT).
If you can't get a Cita: alternatives without an appointment
Not every process necessarily requires the personal route via the Jefatura. The DGT offers a wide range of telematic services through which many procedures can be completed entirely online – with no need to wait for a free slot. So first check whether your matter can already be handled digitally before you start searching for a Cita.
If your process is strictly tied to an in-person appointment and you can't find a free slot for days, you have the following options:
- Check regularly at different times of day, as new slots can be released
- Switch to the miDGT app, which sometimes shows different availability
- Commission a specialised Gestoría to handle the process telematically
- For fines: use the payment channel directly online, via app or by phone, without needing a Cita
Most common mistakes when booking a Cita Previa
- Booking too late: Anyone who only looks for an appointment shortly before a deadline expires easily runs into time trouble, as calendars are often booked out for weeks.
- Wrong Trámite selected: If the wrong type of procedure is chosen in the form, the system refuses the appointment or you get turned away on site.
- Missing Cl@ve certificate: Without digital identification, many online procedures already fail at the first step.
- Company accounts in the private Cita system: Since March 2021, the Cita system has been reserved for private individuals – companies need other channels.
- Forgetting original documents: If the German driving licence is not presented in original form at the appointment, the process cannot be completed.
What happens after the appointment?
After a successful DGT appointment, depending on the procedure you will receive a confirmation, a provisional document, or directly the new driving licence or registration document. Keep all receipts and reference numbers safe, especially the payment confirmation for the Tasa. Should you subsequently receive a traffic fine or have questions about registration, you can contact the DGT via the Sede Electrónica, the miDGT app, or by phone.
Checklist before your DGT appointment
- NIE number and ID document ready at hand
- Residencia or Empadronamiento certificate prepared
- Original German driving licence or vehicle documents with you
- Health test completed beforehand, if required for the procedure
- Official fee (Tasa) paid or proof of payment brought along
- Reference number of the Cita previa noted down
- Alternative appointments in mind in case the first slot is cancelled
Conclusion
The Cita previa DGT Palma is mandatory for most in-person administrative procedures – from transferring a driving licence to re-registering a vehicle – and the appointment situation in Palma is considered particularly tight. Anyone who plans ahead, consistently uses the online channel via sede.dgt.gob.es, knows the 10 a.m. trick, and, if in doubt, switches to the miDGT app or a specialised Gestoría, will get through the process much more relaxed. Also always check first whether your matter can already be handled entirely without an appointment through the DGT's telematic services.
