In Palma, Mallorca, a new book tells 40 people’s stories, including ten from the Balearic Islands. One of them is Carolina, who once tried to take her own life and now says she wants to live. Journalists David Martínez and Sara Barrera presented the book, Persones, diferències i oportunitats, for the social organisation Intress on 29 October.

Montse, 63, lives in Andratx, Mallorca. She had a stroke at 56 and became afraid to leave home in case it happened again. With help from the Andratx day centre, she overcame that fear. She now travels beyond Mallorca.

Génesis, a 32-year-old Chilean tattoo artist living on Mallorca, lost her connection with art during a relationship in which her partner abused her. After she reported the abuse several times, a police officer helped arrange the documents she needed to travel to Spain. She now tattoos again.

The book also covers migration, unwanted loneliness and drug use. Carolina hopes her account will help others. For Génesis, the best part of taking part was feeling that someone had listened to her and believed her.
