27 Mallorca towns lack Alcover and La Balanguera
Twenty-seven towns across Mallorca have no public place or municipal facility named after Joan Alcover or La Balanguera, the island’s anthem. On Monday, cultural organisation Obra Cultural Balear wrote to every town hall on the island, calling for both names to be added to streets, squares, public spaces or municipal facilities. The appeal follows its review of naming across Mallorca’s 53 municipalities.
Only Palma, Inca, Marratxí, Pollença, Consell and Santa Maria del Camí currently honour both Alcover and La Balanguera. A further 12 municipalities have a street, square or avenue named for Alcover: Calvià, Llucmajor, Manacor, Alcúdia, Felanitx, Son Servera, Alaró, Algaida, Lloseta, Artà, Santa Margalida and Montuïri.
Eight municipalities have a public space or council facility carrying the name La Balanguera: Andratx, Sa Pobla, Esporles, Campos, Santa Eugènia, Costitx, Deià and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.
Among the towns without either name are Capdepera, Binissalem, Llubí, Porreres, Sineu, Sóller, Sencelles, Bunyola and Campanet. Obra Cultural Balear said it was significant that more than half of Mallorca’s municipalities still had no public reference to the two cultural symbols, a century after Alcover’s death and during the centenary year of La Balanguera’s musical version.
In the letters, the group’s president, Antoni Llabrés, describes Alcover as an important figure in Mallorca’s language and culture, while La Balanguera forms part of the island’s shared imagination. The organisation says giving the names a lasting place in towns would help pass that culture to future generations.
