Antich awards launch in Palma: entries open 21 September
Nominations for the new Francesc Antich awards open on 21 September after the PSIB announced their first edition in Palma on Thursday, 17 September. The annual prizes honour Francesc Antich, the Balearic Islands’ first socialist president. Entries close on 21 November.
The PSIB says the awards will recognise people and organisations that advance self-government in the Balearic Islands, the islands’ shared identity and federalist thinking. They also reflect Antich’s inclusive outlook towards the four islands and Catalan-speaking countries with longstanding cultural and political links to the Balearics.
There are two categories. One is for a civic, cultural or institutional career or initiative that has defended, strengthened or raised the profile of Balearic self-government and collective identity.
The other, the Francesc Antich i Oliver Prize for Studies and Federalist Thought, is for authors whose work examines federalism, international cooperation or the development of Spain’s autonomous-state model. Both are honorary awards, although the winning study will also be published in the organiser’s own series.
A proposed jury for the first edition includes representatives of the PSIB executive led by Francina Armengol, a member of the Antich family, University of the Balearic Islands professor Joan Oliver Araujo and lawyer Lourdes Aguiló. Former minister and PSC president Miquel Iceta and law professor Zumila Pérez, the central government’s commissioner for the DANA in Valencia, have also been invited to serve.
Candidates may be put forward by others or enter themselves. Applications must include a statement setting out the candidate’s merits, a copy of the work or article, and a short CV for the person or organisation nominated.
