Mallorca hosts three architecture film nights
Three architecture films will play at venues across Mallorca from Wednesday 7 October, with a discussion after every screening. The first, El Arquitecto by Stéphane Demoustier, is shown in the courtyard of the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands (Coaib). The series then moves to the Teatro Principal de Inca on 29 October and the Fundación Toni Catany in Llucmajor on 20 November.
Coaib has launched the first edition of La medida invisible with the Teatro Principal de Inca, the Asociación Amigos del Cine de Inca y Comarca and the Fundación Toni Catany Centro Internacional de Fotografía. Its three sessions use cinema to explore buildings, cities and the way people live in spaces.
Three films, three themes
El Arquitecto opens the series with the gap between an architectural idea and the reality of getting it built. It follows the construction, administrative and social pressures that can reshape a project.
Kogonada’s Columbus follows on in Inca. The film considers how people learn to look at rooms, buildings and their surroundings, and how that way of seeing can change over a lifetime.
The final night in Llucmajor features E.1027 - Eileen Gray and House by the Sea by Beatrice Minger and Christoph Schaub. It tells the story of architect and designer Eileen Gray and examines authorship, collaboration and appropriation in architecture.
Talks follow every screening
Joan Carles Martorell will lead the conversations after each film. Architects Carme Pinós, Pep Ripoll and Juan Miguel Tizón are among those due to take part, alongside professionals from other fields.
Coaib says the programme turns attention to parts of architecture that cannot be drawn or measured, including commitment to an idea, professional responsibility and the way spaces are seen. Coordinator Joan Carels Martorell called the three titles cinematic “gems” that have had only very limited distribution in Spain.
