Mallorca archive stages fire drill to save documents
Mallorca, Wednesday 4 November: a mock electrical fire at the Archive of the Kingdom of Mallorca in Palma tests how staff and emergency crews protect people before rescuing documents. Once workers and archive users are safe, the teams practise putting out the fire and dealing with the affected records.
They follow the archive’s own safety plan first, then its plan for protecting cultural heritage. The documents are sorted, treated and moved to a building for safekeeping.
The Balearic Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport says the archive is the first heritage institution on Mallorca to have both written and tested such a rescue plan. It is the second in the Balearic Islands, after the Museum of Menorca. The Balearic government’s directorates-general for Culture and for Emergencies and the Interior organised the drill with the Palma and Mallorca fire brigades.
