Balearic cinemas face €188,889 funding clawback

Balearic cinemas face a demand to return €188,889 in cultural funding after a dispute over the deadline for a 2025 grant scheme. The Balearic Association of Cinema Companies says Spain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts has asked the Govern to repay the full amount. The money was intended for cinema venues and audience development.

The association says the grant call was published before 31 December 2025, the only deadline set when the funds were transferred. It argues that the rules did not require the process to be completed or the grants awarded before the end of that year.

Dispute over a later condition

The Institute of Balearic Cultural Industries, part of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, met the original condition, according to the cinema body. The grant decision was issued in March 2026 and covered the scheme’s full amount.

Cinema operators say the Spanish institute is now applying a requirement that was not included for the 2025 funds. In their view, the condition was expressly introduced for 2026 transfers and cannot be applied retrospectively.

Call for review

The association calls the repayment demand disproportionate because the funds were put towards the cultural purpose for which they were intended. It has asked for the case to be reviewed to prevent cinemas across the Balearic Islands being hit by what it describes as an administrative issue.

Spain’s Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts is part of the national Ministry of Culture.
