Mallorca’s Blai Bonet exhibition turns poems into art
In Santanyí, Mallorca, a 1952 portrait of Blai Bonet meets art made decades later at the s’Abeurador Cultural Centre: the exhibition runs until 14 November. Called Ara veuràs en Blai Bonet, it places the poet’s words alongside paintings, photographs, installations and audiovisual work. The Mallorca Island Council says the show marks the centenary of Bonet’s birth.
Curator Joana Serra brings together artists who knew Bonet or read his work during his lifetime with artists working today. Francisco Bernareggi’s portrait of the young poet, lent by Bonet’s heirs, appears alongside a poster Miquel Barceló made for a tribute to him in 1989. A piece by Toni Catany pays Bonet a direct tribute, while a new installation by Biel March uses an image of Mallorca from 1956.
Tanit Plana’s Petó is printed on hanging fabric, and Albert Pinya contributes an audiovisual work. Each piece is paired with an extract from Bonet’s writing. Even the exhibition’s title comes from one of his poems, published in Cant de l’arc in 1979.
The centenary programme continues with readings, conversations, concerts and literary walks until the end of the year. An official event at the Royal Palace, the Mallorca Island Council’s headquarters, is planned for 9 December.
