Mallorca book week opens with nearly 20 events

Palma’s Setmana del Llibre, Mallorca’s Catalan-language book week, has opened in the gardens of La Misericòrdia with nearly 20 events running from 24 to 27 September. The 37th edition brings authors, booksellers, publishers and readers together over four days. The Gremi de Llibreters de Mallorca has organised the programme, backed by the Council of Mallorca.

Book launches, conversations, poetry readings and activities for all ages fill the programme. Antònia Roca, the Council’s vice-president for Culture and Heritage, called the event an essential date for celebrating literature made in Mallorca and putting writers and the book trade in view.

On Saturday 26 September, Caterina Valriu will present La rateta i l'avellaner, a new title in the Bitzoc collection, through a storytelling session. The book adapts Mallorca’s traditional rondalles tales for young readers.

The garden hosts the poetry recital Amb la mar enfront de la mirada at 13.15 on 27 September. Fundació Mallorca Literària and the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics are staging the tribute to Blai Bonet at the same time in Palma and Barcelona, with Llucia Serra, Pau Sanchís and Mireia Calafell taking part in Palma.

Also on Sunday, De com era infant, Rafel Ginard’s childhood memoirs, returns in a new edition. The Sala del Aljub is meanwhile hosting the Paraules que conten històries Scrabble tournament until 27 September, played across four duplicate games.
