Palma opens race for ten Catalan language awards

Palma is opening nominations for ten Catalan language and culture awards, with entries due by 16 October. The Obra Cultural Balear is staging the Premios 31 de Desembre for the 40th time. Nominations open on Friday.

The awards recognise people, groups, businesses and public or private bodies whose work supports the use of Catalan and promotes the Balearic Islands’ own national identity.

Anyone can put forward a nominee, but the Obra Cultural Balear’s board decides whether to accept the proposal as a candidacy. Entries must be sent to the organisation’s office on Sant Alonso Street in Palma or by email.

Each nomination needs a written case setting out the award category, the nominee’s full name or organisation name, and the full address and telephone number of both the nominee and the person making the proposal.

Awards span education, media and literature

The Francesc de Borja Moll award is for an organisation and the Josep Maria Llompart award for an individual, both recognising work defending, spreading or promoting the language, culture or identity of the Balearic Islands.

Other categories cover education and leisure projects, especially those encouraging Catalan in educational settings, and communication work through media outlets, production companies, programmes, professionals or content creators.

A non-fiction work of particular interest to the Balearic Islands can receive the Miquel dels Sants Oliver award, while the Bartomeu Rosselló-Pòrcel category is for an under-30 or a young collective with a cultural record in the islands.

The remaining prizes recognise voluntary language work, established Catalan literary writing, and sustained civic, cultural or linguistic work anywhere Catalan is spoken.
