Palma ceramic exhibition: time takes centre stage

Clay, glaze and fire take centre stage at a new ceramic exhibition in Palma, Mallorca. Joan Pere Català Roig’s De la terra al Cel opens at the Misericòrdia chapel on 11 September 2026 and runs until 6 March 2027. The Biennal B show brings together a selection of works by the Palma-born artist.

Curated by Luis Juan de Sentmenat García Ruiz, the exhibition focuses on the time and skill behind each piece. The Consell de Mallorca and Es Baluard say Català Roig’s work follows the changing material from the potter’s wheel to the firing process.

Clay, glaze and the time to make a piece

The artist’s work pushes back against speed and spectacle. Instead, it gives weight to the time needed to make a ceramic piece, treating the craft process itself as a form of knowledge.

Català Roig explores what can happen with clay and glaze, while anticipating and working with the changes caused during firing. Antònia Roca, the Mallorca councillor for Culture and Heritage, said the show recognises the craft and knowledge that support ceramics as a contemporary art form.

Es Baluard director David Barro said the work invites people to pause over creative processes and value knowledge built through experience and direct contact with materials.

A Palma career with work across Mallorca

Català Roig, born in Palma in 1973, first learned ceramics at his family’s Es Retall workshop. He began studying at the Escola d'Art de Palma in 1994, then built a career spanning ceramic production, teaching and art. He led the Escola Municipal de Ceràmica de Marratxí from 2012 to 2020.

His work around Mallorca includes reproducing 4,000 tiles for the restoration of the bell tower at Valldemossa Charterhouse. He also created the mosaic at the fountain in Palma’s Plaça de la Reina and restored a mural by Lluís Castaldo in the Parc de la Quarantena.
