Chopin in Mallorca: Chengyi Chen plays Deià
Chopin will be heard in Deià, Mallorca, on Wednesday when Chinese pianist Chengyi Chen takes the stage at the Festival de Deià. Chen, born in 2005 and a finalist in the Samson François competition, will also play works by Beethoven, Ravel, Debussy and Franck. Festival organisers announced the recital on Monday.
Chen began learning the piano at six under the guidance of his aunt. He later studied with Zhang Peng, travelled to various countries and won several international competitions for young performers.
From Paris studies to a top prize
In 2022, Chen joined the École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot. While studying there, he won the Chatou International Piano Competition with a unanimous first prize.
He completed his studies in 2025 with a Concert Diploma, the highest honours and congratulations from the jury.
Performances in France and Monaco
Chen now works on the French music scene, appearing at festivals and productions including the Opus Cortot concert season, Les Nocturnes du Piano and Le Seine Musicale.
Paris City Hall regularly invites him to give solo recitals and chamber concerts. He has also worked with opera singer Jean-Philippe Lafont and appeared before Monaco's royal family in 2025.
